Communications Operators

Our Communications Operators can answer anything

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Force Communications Room sits at the very heart of our operations. After all, it’s the part of Hertfordshire Constabulary where people like you handle all incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public – something that can be very rewarding indeed.

You can meet one of our Communications Operators here:

Andy, Communications Operator

Made up of around 300 permanent members of staff working varying shifts, the six teams based in the Force Communications Room take (and make) an average of 3000 calls a day – no two of which are ever quite the same. One minute you could be noting down the details of a stolen vehicle. The next, logging a report of a missing person or transferring an incident to dispatch and control. Clearly, our Communications Operators’ application is second to none, and yours will have to be too.

Working towards specific targets set by the Police Authority, you’ll be one of the people aiming to answer at least 90 per cent of emergency calls within 10 seconds, and 80 per cent of non-emergency calls within 30. In addition to this, you’ll need to record all reports of crime within 24 hours of being notified of the offence. To help achieve this, we monitor team performance to ensure the right level of support and coaching is in place for you and your colleagues.
