Key questions

  • How old do I have to be to join?

    Open

You need to be 18 years of age.

  • Do I have to commit to a minimum amount of time?

    Open

Not at all. Just offer us as little or as much time as you can spare.

  • Where will I be based?

    Open

We have co-ordinators right across Hertfordshire, so you can be based anywhere you want. It's completely up to you.

  • What roles can Police Community Volunteers do?

    Open

The tasks are supplemental to work currently undertaken by police officers and police staff. Nothing you do will be a substitute or alternative for the work of the Constabulary's full and part-time staff.

In general, we use volunteers for tasks which are not currently being carried out but would add value to our service if they were introduced, or to free up time for police officers and staff to focus on areas where their skills and experience are best placed. At the moment we have volunteers performing a wide variety of tasks for police intervention and safer neighbourhood teams, Crime Management, MU Scientific Services, Citizen Focus and many more. As we expand our volunteer establishment you will notice even more volunteer opportunities being carried out.

  • Where will I be placed?

    Open

Volunteers can be placed in any team or department where there is a suitable volunteer role to be filled. Typically a volunteer will carry out their task on police premises alongside officers or police staff. Certain volunteer tasks might be performed out in the community such as on community involvement days or at recruitment fairs.

  • Who can be a Police Community Volunteer?

    Open

Anyone above the age of 18 can apply. As long as you clear through the vetting and selection process you will be considered to join the scheme.

  • Will I be trained, and to what level?

    Open

All Volunteers attend an induction to give them a better understanding of the Constabulary and how we work. This includes presentations on health and safety, Constabulary procedure, correct use of our IT systems, IT security and data protection.

You'll also have local training relevant to your tasks. Where computer use is a necessary part of their role we will make sure you have or develop the IT skills needed.

  • Will I get expenses?

    Open

You can claim authorised out of pocket expenses for the cost of travelling to and from your place of volunteering, and for the cost of parking if allocated parking is not provided.

  • Who do I ask for advice?

    Open

You'll have a local Volunteer Advisor who you can approach with any queries or problems. They'll also be the person who allocates your tasks. The Advisor is usually a police officer or member of police staff who works alongside you. For example, if your volunteer task was to support a Safer Neighbourhood Team, the team's Sergeant would probably be your Volunteer Advisor.

A volunteer coordinator who is a member of police staff and has responsibility for the volunteers in a number of Community Safety Partnerships is there to support both you and the Volunteer Advisor.

We hope this page has helped answer your queries, however please feel free to email us at policerecruitment@herts.pnn.police.uk where we will be happy to respond to any additional questions you may have.
