Training

Training for Special Constables takes place over eighteen days, either on weekends or over weekday periods, at our training unit in Hertfordshire. Rest assured you’ll be given plenty of time to complete it all. Throughout, you’ll develop a broad understanding of the knowledge and skills you need to be a serving officer.

Over the course of the programme, you’ll receive a firm grounding in legal powers and procedures, communications, traffic laws and first-aid. There will be self-defence training too – while you’ll always be alongside regular police officers on patrol, it’s important that you learn to take care of yourself as well as others in your local community. You’ll also gain a solid understanding of specific crime and drug-related issues. And by the final week, you should be ready to take your oath of allegiance, receive your warrant card – and go out on your first shift.
