Schooling

Hertfordshire has a good range of infant, primary, junior and pre-preparatory schools for children aged 4 to 11 years old, as well as excellent secondary schools. If your children are that bit older and looking to attend a college in the area, there are four major colleges – Oaklands College, North Hertfordshire College, West Herts College and Hertford Regional College. There is also the University of Hertfordshire, which offers over 400 degree and diploma courses spread across four campuses in Hatfield, Hertford, Watford and St Albans.

In terms of the official figures, a higher than average proportion of primary and secondary schools have been found to be as 'good' or 'outstanding', while the quality of childcare and nursery provision is broadly average. Children and young people in Hertfordshire achieve good results at school, and children have performed consistently well through all stages of their education, achieving better GCSE grades than the regional and national average. Young people continue to do well when they leave school.

People in paid roles can look forward to the chance to claim part of their salary in childcare vouchers which are exempt from National Insurance contributions. Vouchers cover the full spectrum of childcare services from nannies to playgroups.
