Key places in Hertfordshire

Just under an hour’s drive (and even less if you take the train) from London, Hertfordshire offers all the benefits of big city life combined with the beauty and tranquility of the country. So whether your tastes are for rural calm or urban sophistication, you’ll feel right at home here.

Amenities

From big retail names to street markets and chic boutiques, Hertfordshire can meet almost any shopping need. Large towns such as Watford and Welwyn Garden City have a broad selection of high street shops, department stores and smaller, locally owned businesses. But if it’s something unique you’re after, the picturesque city of   St Albans is home to specialist shops, smart boutiques and vibrant street markets that date back hundreds of years. And if, after all that, you still can’t find what you’re looking for, London’s less than an hour away.

If you prefer something more active than hitting the high street, with aerobics, American football, yoga and volleyball all on offer, you’re bound to find something to interest you here in Hertfordshire. We have thirteen leisure centres across the county, 50 golf courses, a flying school, ski centre and canoe club. And, of course, if you’d rather watch than take part, there’s Luton Town and Watford football clubs right on your doorstep, not to mention nearly 20 well-supported rugby clubs in the county.

Places

As well as being home to Knebworth House and Hatfield House and Gardens, Hertfordshire is famous for its Roman heritage (most notably in the beautiful city of St Albans) and its unspoilt country villages. With Ayot St Lawrence, Codicote and Wheathampstead on your doorstep, you’ll always be perfectly positioned for a summer afternoon stroll or a pint in a country pub. At the same time, the bright lights and entertainment on offer in our large towns, such as Stevenage or Hertford, are never far away either. In Hertfordshire, places of interest are never far away.
