Damien Kennedy
Detective Inspector in charge of Area Crime in Hertford.
Time with Herts Constabulary
Three months.
What were you doing before you joined Herts Police?
I was with the Met Police in London, based in Enfield. Prior to that I worked with the murder teams in East London.
What motivated you to join Hertfordshire Constabulary?
Firstly it was the promotion opportunities. I am quite ambitious and
I want to achieve a bit more, which I felt Hertfordshire could help me
do. But also it was about work/life balance. The commute into London
was becoming a real slog and I was missing out on time with my family.
So I wanted to redress that balance and make a change.
How have you found working with Hertfordshire Constabulary?
It's very much a people-oriented force, where colleagues are
friendly and know one another. They've matured in their careers
together, so everyone works well together and there seems to be a sense
of pride that goes with doing a good job for someone you know. I also
like the fact that I now work for my local force, so the things I do
have a direct impact on the area where I live.
What is different about policing in Hertfordshire compared to your previous force?
There's a lot more personal responsibility in Herts and more of a
micro-management structure. There's the opportunity for people to take
ownership of their work, develop and progress their careers. Also, I've
certainly felt that there's more camaraderie and teamwork here, which
makes for a good working environment.
Do you see a future for yourself in Hertfordshire?
Definitely. I see myself as ready to compete for the next rank and
take things forward, and I'd like to do that with Hertfordshire. It's a
great area to live, close to London, but far enough away to be able to
enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. And I'm happy to be
bringing up my family here, so I certainly see a future for myself in
Hertfordshire.
